The Consultation Letters of Dr William Cullen (1710-1790) at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
[ID:477] From: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / To: Dr Christopher Douglas (of Kelso) / Regarding: Mr Richardson (Patient) / 16 March 1773 / (Outgoing)
Letter for "Dr Douglas pro [for] Mr Richardson', who Cullen met and examined on the road to Kelso. Gives dietary and other directions for managing a stomach disorder resulting from 'marks of a weak nervous system', with two recipes. Obscure contraction after 'Mr' in the title to the recipe might be a clue to Mr Richardson's first-name {Malcolm?, Matthew?] which is otherwise untraced.

Dr Douglas For Mr Richardson
Your patient overtook me on the road to Kelso & I stopt to examine his complaints. w
I had mistaken his temperament which is not at all atrabilian & found he has still a disorder of his
Stomach when his head is affected & I found many other marks of a weak nervous system. I am of
opinion that his recovery can only be hoped for from Tonic Remedies & upon that plan I have
prescribed ↑as↑ upon the other page. Along with your medicine he should be much in the
fresh air & frequently
on horseback. Tho he tells me that the cold Bath did not agree with him I am persuaded that properly
used it may yet be of service to him. but he cannot have it right or with quality in the neigh¬
bouring brook & the only way that I could promise upon would be his using one of your bathing
machines which will cost him about 40 shillings. If he agress to use it I shall order one to be
made & sent him. In his diet he must avoid roots greens & fruit. He may take a bit of
light meat at dinner but his diet ought chiefly of milk and farinacea: For ordinary drink
he should take water alone & abstain from all kinds of Malt Liquour. I think no kind
of strong drink proper for him but if it be any let him take Spirits & water. tea
& Coffee are both bad for him but he may take Cocoa Tea. Both winter & summer
he should be well clothed & a flannel shirt next to his skin would be useful to him
Take a drachm of powdered Colombo root, half a drachm of Gentian Extract. Fifteen grains of Green Vitriol; and sufficient muscilage of Gum Arabic to make into a mass to be divided into pills of five grains each. Label: Strengthening Pills. Two to be taken twice a day an hour before dinner & supper washing them down with a small cupfull of the following tincture
Take three ounces each of bruised Peruvian Bark and Orange Peel; and a drachm of Cinnammon, pouring on four ounces of French Brandy. Macerate [for?] two hours, then add twelve ounces of boiling water. Macerate, and [return to it?] over twelve hours and strain. Label: Strengthening Tincture.
