To Mr Goodsir Surgeon at Liven concerning Mr Henderson

I received yours yesterday but being the country could not answer it in
course. Mr Hendersons situation gives me a great deal of concern as
it seems that his disease rather increased upon him. For the suppres¬
sion of urine
I think you did right both by the Injections & blister but find
little reason for your delaying the catheter which may come to be
absolutely necessary. For his sweating I hope it has been much
owing to warm weather & his weakness. The first is now mended or
will mend soon. The other is more difficult & must mend more
slowly. In the mean time you may try the mixture ordered below
as it may also help his Urine. You must lay aside the
Elix. guaqacin. Tho I do not [impute?] his sweatings to it, but at
present he can hardly bear any thing heating. You may still
continue his Electuary but I regret much that you have not
said a word about the Electricity. There is reason to suspect
that his guts are in a very paralytic state and you must
therefore take the more pains to keep then in motion. Your
mustard Glysters are very proper but I think their frequent
use may be in danger of hurting the guts & therefore you
must interpose some other kinds both of Glysters & laxatives
For the first believe you will find common salt answer
as well as any thing and for the last you may try either
Daffys Elixir according to the last dispensatory 1 or the pulverised Jalap compound of the same. 2 I must complain that your
Letters are too short. You dont tell me whether Mr Henderson
goes abroad or not. If he can any ways bear it I am
persuaded it is one of the best remedies for his sweating.
When you write again pray mention every circumstance
about him. Wishing heartily for his better health I am
