Normalized Text

[Page 1]

To Dr Grieve Concerning Mr Tweedie

As the Fever still continues I think he should lose a
little
blood from time to time - particularly when
the difficulty of breathing is troublesome.
but I leave it to Dr Grieves discretion

Repeat the Blistering & particularly to the
Breast et pars servetur aperta 1

Costiveness must be avoided, & by cooling
Laxatives, as Crem Tart. vel. Flor. Sulph. or
these sharpened by an addition of P. e jal. compt.

To assist Expectoration & to help to keep
his belly regular he may use a Squill Mixture.
or sometimes the Demulcent pectorals; avoiding
the heating ones.

Edinburgh 1t July 1777.

Papa just in his night gown sets out tomorrow for Taymouth. D. Argyle. The Drs examined Clarke 2

Notes:

1: Cullen is indicating that once one blistering is completed, another is to be applied ("...to be kept open").

2: This note gives clear evidence of the participation of one of Cullen's children as copyist. The visit to Taymouth is confirmed by subsequent entries, but the references to the Duke of Argyle and 'Clarke' remain obscure.
