For Mr Joseph Harris Surgeon at Egremont.
Sorry your ailments so obstinate. Still I think it is rheumatic
& should been relieved by Dover's powders & I wish you had told me
more particularly concerning its operation & effects. Did your
head sweat freely, & did you avoid cold for some time after.
If an opiate can be of service it is more likely to be so in
the form of Dover's powder than in any other. My friend
Percival mistaken in the effects of the Coffee. I have
some trust in an Issue, but do not know what you mean
by one cut in your head. I would employ a perpetual
blister on the crown of the head & if this will not dis¬
charge freely, make a pea issue on the nape of the neck
each side of the spine. If none of these discharge freely
& continue so, you need expect no relief from them.
Keep your head close shaven & every night anoint your forehead
& temples with the following Embrocation.
Take 4 ounces of Rectified Alcohol, half an ounce of the most Caustic Spirit of Ammoniac Salts, and an ounce of Camphor. Mix. Apply this more or less as your skin bears it & when from some days application you find relief, abstain from it till a recurrence of the disorder requires it again.
