To Dr Garrioch Concerning Mr Forbes of Bulogie
The Tenesmus owing to a retention of Faeces in the
Colon. & pains must be taken to procure regular dis¬
charges - He must take a Laxative Med every day
Rhubarb improper - the Best, Castor Oil if you
have this & he can take it. If not the next best is
Flor. Sulph. or Pulv. ej comp with double
or treble the proportion of Cryst. Tart---
& any of these last may be made more agreeable
by a little Manna. -- Prepare the Pulv. ej C
by long & diligent Triture
While the Laxative is employed it will
be necessary till the Guts are in a proper
course to employ an Opiate every night. [?]
an hour of two before bedtime & make the
dose a full one that he may avoid taking
any at any other time. - Giving the Opiate
by Glyster may be more effectual, & mix it
two or three ℥ of a strong solution of G. Arab.
& in this case the dose must be larger than
by the Mouth.
If there is any fault in the rectum
or by frequent irritation any sore or excoriation
may be produced, it may be proper to relieve ↓it↓

by injecting some Emollient Med. such as -
half an ounce of the Linimentum Cereaum
dissolved in two ounces of Florence Oil optimum
injecting it pretty warm that it may kept fluid & pretty
warm & equally mixed - for this it would be conve¬
nient to have a Syringe that may be warmed before
pouring the Oil into it -- the proper time for the
injecting is in the morning before getting out of bed
& he should lye still an hour or two after it ---
