For the Honourable Mr Jhn Douglas
Children liable to ophthalmia, readily have it at this season
& I have known them come for several years following, but with
little trouble or consequence. So of Mr D. therefore no strong
measures. till more occasion. enough to obviate the increase
of the inflammation.
Avoid animal food & wine. take milk & farinacea
& drink cold plain water.
Avoid strong light, sunshine, candles, fire, but unless,
much worse may go abroad, if he can avoid dust & keep the
shade, with a superfrontal shade. If light be disagreable
& he become worse, must keep at home & even to a dark
chamber, & avoid covering his eyes with any thing. No fire

in his chamber unless in wet or cold weather. may
ride or walk but never to heat himself.
Wash his eyes twice or thrice a day or oftener as itching
with cold water, & every evening with yethe Collyrium & not oftener un¬
less the inflammation increase.
If the inflammation become considerable. leeches near the
eye & if required, twice, but not thrice a week.
In case of costiveness . a draught or 2 of new drawn whey
in the morning & at least with the addition of half a tea spoonful
of Magnesia. If the inflammation still increase purge gently
with the Senna tea but moderate & not frequent.
If in spite of these &cc. a blister behind one or both
ears but heal it up in course, for a perpetual issue both
very troublesome & less effectual than fresh blistering
