For the Revd Mr Grant
Your distress gives me a great
deal of concern & I shall be very happy to give
you relief. In one particular I hope I can by
telling you that I am firmly persuadd. you have
no ailment but that of your eyes or what depend
on the same humour which is in them. To discuss this I
do not find so easy but hope it may be done by a
very careful diet, fresh air, frequent Exercise on horseback &
cold bathing. These measures I would trust to for
some time without any medicine & particularly I think you
have taken the Bark too long. For your eyes
the water on the other is the only application I would
make to them. Poultices of all kinds I think
bad for them. If they are apt to be glued together
in the morning you may apply the bigness of
half a pea to the edges of the eyelids of the
ointment prescribed below. After trying this
course for some time if you please to write
to me I shall be glad to advise further as
well as I can. Please tell me that then if at
any time of your life you ever had anything
scrophulous or if ever any of your family
[Page 2]
were affected in that way.
1774.
Take four ounces of Rosewater, a drachm of distilled Acetate and a scruple of Sugar of Lead. Dissolve and strain through paper. Label: Water to be employed cold for washing the eyes two or three times a day.
Take half an ounce of the Lead Ointment from the Pharmacopœia. Label: Cooling Ointment the bigness of ½ a pea to be applied to the edges of the eyelids of each eye every night at bedtime.
