To Mr James Dalziel. Dumfries
Sir

I had yours of the 21st current in course but being in the
Country I could not answer it sooner.

I am sorry to find your ailment so obstinate & shall be very
willing to give you all there lies in my power but with
that Mr Young had written at the same time with you to
tell me what length the anod. draught had been increased
& with what effects. I wish also he had told me his opi¬
nion of the matter which you render by stool & what seemed
necessary to be the effect of the Injection eithreither in taking off the
irritation or changing the matter discharged. I wish
too he could tell me if any thing is to be learned by
examining the state [as to?] the fundament so far as he can
reach. Till the nature of the case is more exactly ascertai¬
ned I delay giving further advice but in the meantime
you may continue your goats milk & while it has the effect of kee:¬
ping your belly open you have no need of the laxative Electuary
While your Belly keeps open you may safely use the Anodyne Drops so
so far as to give some sleep or at least to take off the sharp:
ness of the matter I think they should still be employed.
I have no objection to your diet as you give an account of it nor
to the strawberries when you can get them but the quantity you
propose to take of an English qrt [2 cups?] 1 a day seems to
me too much & I would have you begin with ½ pint
English & increase by degrees as you find your bowels
bear them.
