✍ The Case of
Miss Margt. Russell aged nine years of a florid
complection but delicate Habit has been subject
from her Infancy to feverish Complaints.
Two years since after a Fever attended with
Irruptions on her Face which soon went off
a hard indolent Tumor the size of a small
Bean appeard on her Cheek and continued in
that state for 7 Months when it fluctuated.
A small Caustic was apply'd and detergent &
healing Applications were used without Effec[t]
and the Edges became callous and inflamd
about this Time another Tumor of the same
Kind appeard below her Ear which broke of
itself & was dressd as the former & she
took Bark & alterative Powders with Æth
Min. & Cin. Ant. due Regard being had at
the same Times to her Diet which consisted
of Milk Vegetables Fruit and the simplest
animal Food. These being continued for a
few Months & as evident Change another
Surgeon was consulted who advis'd an Application
of Sacc. Saturn in Aq. Ros. and a Physician
directed a Course of Powders
A scruple of Red Bark, and 3 grains each of Cinnabar of Antimony and Native Cinnabar. The above to be mixed with 3 spoonfuls of Greater Compound Lime Water.
These also
[Page 4]
were continued for some Time without
Alteration and 4 grains of prepared Calomel was directed
every third night purging it off in the
Morning with a Senna Infusion. After trying
trying this for six Weeks ineffectually
a Course of Sea Bathing was recommended
and has been continued for six Weeks
but the Sore still retains its first
Appearance, and the other Tumor which
had no Caustic applyd is now exactly
in the same State.
In other Respects she is healthy and
has good Spirits & Appetite.
The Sores frequently appear heald
with a dry Scab upon them but a thin
acrid Discharge generally forces them
off in a few Days and reduces them
to the same State.
She has also a small Tumor on the
Side which discharges a little & two
small ones near the Axilla.
None of her Family have any
Appearance of Scrofula and she has
[Page 5]
always livd in the purest Country Air.
She has had an Issue these 12 Months
which discharges well.
She never had any glandular Swelling
but frequently a Cough on taking a
little Cold.
