Miss Brown aged about twenty of a fair
complexion and delicate frame of body, com¬
plains of loss of apetite, and swelling of the
lower part of the belly; her mother who
examined her says the swelling feels hard
sometimes, and sometimes soft, and there may
be felt unequalities or knots which can be
pushed from one part to another. Her pulse
is small & feeble - her belly bound - Urine
rather scanty.- The Swelling began about 2 Mo ago since.
Her Menses left her about ten months
ago & has never since made their appear¬
ance, nor is there any appearance of fluor
albus :- She knows no cause of retention but
previous to their leaving her, for about two
years, she had been much troubled with
pains in her stomach, flatulencies, and
indigestion ↑which seized her immediately↑ after being affected with what
she calls the ring worm; about the um¬
bilical region.
The remedies employed have been various;
before the obstruction of the Menses - bark
with valerian infused in Wine - Chalybeates
and Fœtids conjoined - & the Cold bath like¬
wise: since that time blood letting from
the feet by leeches - the Extract. melampodium
with G. assafœtid.- Pulv Rub. tinct.- Pulv
Foli sabin. [cin?] Assafœtid.- and likewise
the warm bath has been employed but all
without any good effects from them - Of late
she has had for three or four times a
bolus at bed-time from merc. dulc. gr. V.ijj &
{illeg} with a gentle Physic in the
morning which with some common injections
[Page 2]
have had the effect to lessen the swelling
a little
