Sir
I beg leave to solicit your
advice concerning an obstinate cough
which has held by me for those last
four years --- I happened to be in London
about the beginning of its attack when
Doctor Fothergill gave me some pres¬
criptions and also made me abstain
from Animal food for some weeks
but without any good effect, for two
summers following that I us'd Goat Whey
with as little effect by Doctor Gilchrists
advice last year I had an issue put into
each arm and since that have us'd
for five weeks every evening and morning
a mixture compos'd of the Gums Guicum and
Arabic. dissolv'd in water from either
of which I have perveiv'd no effect,
at present I am using no means
what ever ------- My Cough seems
of an uncommon kind my feelings
indicate that it proceeds from some thick
[Page 2]
phligm gathering near the mouth
of the windpipe which by strong
exertions in Coughing comes up when
I am for a time reliev'd those exertions
however don't seem to strain my
breast or chist which wou'd make
me think my disorder don't reach them
I liv'd a good many years in
Virginia and about nine years ago return'd
to Britain I was there and also after my
return at times subject to bilious and
rheumatic complaints but since
I have had this Cough neither of those
complaints have appear'd ---- In short
for those last three years the Cough
has been my only complaint -------
not sensible of any feverish tendency
and my apetite both in eating and
drinking, (which was always moderate)
the same as usual. My Cough
seems little effected by either cold or warm
seasons tho' sitting in a Church or
cold room find increases it for a time
I take exercise as usual but by
the least overdoing I find my wind fail
me much sooner than it did a few
years ago, this may partly proceed
[Page 3]
from my Complaint and maybe
from the age of 52 not being so alert
as that of 25. I have thus given
you all the insight I can as to my
disorder your being so good when con¬
venient as to send me your opinion
or prescription I shall esteem a favour
tho' I must own my Cough has
alalong shown ↑uch↑ obstinacy and perc¬
everance that I shall not be dis¬
appointed at the failure of any
attempts made to remove it
Believe me to be with the greatest
respect
