On Tuesday was eight days Mr. Waddell
our patient turned suddenly worse than he had been
for some time before the noise in his head being
vastly increased, the stiffness in his hands with
a degree of numbness likeways returned tho' not
to such a degree as formerly, the spasm in his
mouth
was likeways much increased otherways
much the same, he had wanted the Elixir for a
[some?] nights while I prepared a new quantity
having neglected to let me know when it was near
done, (since I take Care to be always ready) as the
weather was tolerably mild I at his own desire
gave him a sweat on the morrow with the usual
precautions and with remarkable success I repeated
it on Monday last and with still greater success
the numbness is gone again his mouth is very near
even is Chearfull, appetite good, had formerly

no power over his right Eye to shut it, can
move it now, his face is plumper, as whenever
the turns worse his features contract much
his pulse today is equal, full, soft, about 70,
as the weather is still fresh I propose sweating
him
on Saturday as he is very fond of it from
his being sensibly better and I'll there rest till
I hear from you, I would have been in Edinburgh
before now to have conversed with about his case
but has not been well myself for some time
being troubled with a serpiginous Eruption
on my right hand and a small spot on my left
foot
which bafles every method I can take
to remove it going and coming so suddenly as
one could scarcely think possible and generaly
alternating with one another, has had less or
more of it for some months and at particular
times for some years, am generally of a Costive
habit
of body, has been troubled with the piles

for some years which I believe a Costiveness
brought on since the Eruption became worse
the piles is gone, has frequently flying pains
of a dull kind shifting suddenly from place to
place when the Eruption is going from the hand
to the foot or from the foot to the hand, has
frequently a Nausea, sometimes not sometimes
acid Eructations with rumbling of the Intestines
for a Month or more has been frequently
plagued with a thin salivation, but now seems
to be gone it was worst when my stomach
was most out of order, I first tryed Gentle
laxatives
, Decoction of the woods, every part
of the antiphlogistic Regimen without effect
tryed Cathartics with Calomel but was worse.
Whenever I tryed Mercury, in short I thought
myself worse of all Evacuations, (I forgot to mention
that I bled first,) I then tryed the bark without
Effect, I vomit [twice?] It would seem to be what
Sydenham calls the scorbutic Rhewmatism tho

[Page 4]

the scurvy has certainly no share ↑in↑ it as I
have no putrid symptoms, upon any Emotion
I have a sudden palpitation of the heart,
Skin always dry, and on the outside of my
thighs
the matter of the sebaceous glands -
hardened so as it may be squeezed out like worm{illeg}
and which matter seems likeways to be
the cause of pimples in the face as upon one
of these being larger and harder than ordinary
it inflames the neighbouring parts brings on a
suppuration
which throughs it out and I can
prevent pimples by squezing out that matter
in short it would seem a disorder much conec¬
ted with the system from the observation of the
piles
, and which induced me to try an Issue
in my arm, but with no better Effects than the
others If you can think of any method whereby
I may be relieved shall be gratfully remembered
I'll do more for Waddell till I hear from you
and am with the utmost respect
