Dear Sir

I am desired to consult you for an honest Man in the
Neighbourhood who has been some Time my Patient,
he is betwixt 50 & 60 Years of Age, his Employment
dragging a Net in the Salmon Fishery in the Tweed;
sometime in the Summer was seized with a Pain in his
Head particularly the fore Part of it owing he thought to
the Heat of the Sun, this he endured tho' often very severe
till the Beginning of October when going ↑to↑ his Work at
some Distance from Home, he was seized with an almost
total Deprivation of both Sence and Motion; in this
State I first saw him, he was bled, had a Blister to
his Neck & took the Volatile Tincture of Guaiac & some
Purging Draughts by which he was much relieved
& the Pain of his Head gradually abated; I gave him
afterwards Pills of Cinnabar of Antimonuy: Gum Guaiac &
Sal Succinate with Valerian Tea, & Tinctura Sacra to keep
him open; he seamed to recover some Time but began
to complain of a Giddiness in his Head, and sometimes
a Difficulty of Speaking plain which seldom
continued many Hours together, but returns almost

[Page 2]

every Day, but what most allarms his Friends is a
Delirium of which he has had some Slight Appearance
before but last Night continued for above 12 Hours
& had not entirely gone of when I saw him this Afternoon

He has never had any Degree of Fever, his Pulse
always rather slow but for this Fortnight past more
remarkably slow scarce 50 Pulsations in a Minute
,
his Tongue no way disorderd (↑coloured↑) & his Appetite tolerably
good, his Sleep often natural, but the Appearance of
Delirium generally comes on in the Night.

I should observe that he has had a Seaton
in his Neck about a Fortnight which
discharges well but has not given Releif.

I shall be glad of your Directions what should
be {illeg} (↑further↑) done for my Patient's Releif whose Name
is Robert Matheson, at the Same Time it will
give me great Satisfaction to know that Dr
Cullen enjoys good Health and am
