The Consultation Letters of Dr William Cullen (1710-1790) at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
[ID:1907] From: John Corse / To: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / Regarding: John Corse (Patient) / 1 September 1780 / (Incoming)
Letter from John Corse concerning his own case, and reporting that his symptoms have improved after following Cullen's treatment. The letter is addressed to Dr 'Robert' Cullen, presumably in error since Cullen's son Robert went into legal not medical practice. William Cullen has been noted as the 'Addressee' and 'Physician' in assumption that 'Robert' was an error.

In compliance with your kind de¬
sire, when last I parted with you I
write you what here follows. About
a fourthnight ago, I finished a Box
of Pills made & used according to your
Presciption. Frequently one pill sufficed
but for most part I found it necessary to
take two. The Dose did not operate sen¬
sibly above once, excepting two or at most
three times that it operated twice. All along
I used a plaster of the Mild issue Ointment
on the Crown of my head about the dimen¬
sion of a shilling renewing it once in 24
hours and I continue the use of it so that
there is always a gentle running from that
part of my head. When the Pills failed I
used instead of them a spoonfull of white
mustard when going to bed, which has had
regularly the same apparent Effect.
I can say confidently with thankfulness to
Almighty God, and to your benevolent Exer¬
tion of the excellent skill he hath given
you, that I am very considerably better, and
stronger, than when last I waited on you.
Though the belching of wind is pretty much

The same that it has been. Every night
for many years past: yet the Vertigin{illeg}ous dis¬
order is much rarer in its attacks and less
violent, than it was formerly. I use abun¬

the weather permits, and often walk uphill
not only without fatigue but with a
sensible pleasure. My Appetite also
is better and my sleep sound & regular.
