This day Sen-night when I writ you imagined
Dr [H?] Brodie was at Edinburgh and to him refered
[for?] Some of the Symptoms in my Sisters case. I
now am informed he left Edinburgh about a fort¬
night ago & is gone farther South.
I imagine in my last I omitted to mention that
about six weeks ago my Sister [brot?] up a good
deall of Blood first clear and then clotted - she
was not at the Time Coughing Severely but com¬
plained of a great Load at her Stomach & being
a little Sick - the Night this happened she rest
ed much better free of oppression upon her
Breathing there for long before - she has Spit
no Blood Since - but was very Sensible one
[Page 2]
Night about three weeks ago the Something
burst in her Breast and at ↑that↑ time she put up
a good deall of thin Stuff. within these few days
she does not Spit up so much & what she does
is much thicker and of a Yellow colour her
Cough has likewise been easier but her Breath¬
ing is still at times oppressed - she complains of
no pain in her Side or Breast only Some times
when she lays upon her right Side she thinks she
is apter to Cough then when upon the left -
Dr David Brodie has given her a mexture to
promote expectoration with Squils in it this
she has not taken for two days past as the
Squils are allways rather purgative she
drinks now and then a Strong infusion of
the Colts foot - she has not had Such a
Severe fit of her Aguish complaint Since
[Page 3]
Munday Sen-night - but Still a little of the
Cold fit now and then and allways profuse
Sweats thro' the Night. Those Sweats gene¬
rally come on a little after she goes to Bed
provided she falls a Sleep but at any rate
they commonly are quit off before Six in the
Morning. They have been so Severe for a week
past and she so thin & reduced I was affraid
but she Says she does not find herself weaker
Dr Brodie Says she has a good deal of an
intermitant but he dare not venture to give
the Bark - The weather is so Severe she dose
not Venture abroad - and but little out of her
Room neither Dr Brodie or Stephen will allow
her - neither of these Gentlemen Seem to like
Jeanies case. the last Says little & the other
[Page 4]
Seems greatly at a loss what to do - she lives
at present mostly upon Chicken Broth & a
little bit of Chicken or Veall Drinks Water
with Toast and a very little wine amongst
it. Vegetables of no kind agrees - she for some
Nights has been pretty free from the Start¬
ings and cryings in her sleep and has not
complained of the pain in the Bottom of her Stomach
but is greatly oppressed with wind and a Re¬
tension of Urine - this last she has had for some
time past her Urine is generally Red & muddy
She is anxious to hear from you. She Says she
must see your opinion herself - Dr Brodie
talks much of Bristol but she could not at present
make out such a Journey ----
