Mrs Keir of Wester Rhynd aged 46 or 47
was in June last a good deal distressed with
hysteric complaints - for which she had the
jalop. hysteric. & powders of valerian. sylvestr
[Start of margin text]1777[End of margin text] & serpent. Virgin. she in a few days recovered
her former state of health: - as, during her
illness, she discovered symptoms of an intermit¬
tent, she had a course of cort. Peruv.
& continued in good health for many (↑several↑) months
though she did not recover her flesh.
[Start of margin text]December 9.[End of margin text] Distressed a good deal in the same way as before
Repeating jalop. hysteric. stomach oppressed -

Took fifteen grams of powdered ipecacuanha and a vomit.
pulses at this time 90 exceedingly small which
it naturally is. troubled with shiverings which
are frequently succeeded by sweating.

Took pills of squills
in a few days the cough much easier - almost gone
The medicines continued.

[Start of margin text]December 25[End of margin text], Mrs Keir imagined she had caught cold afresh
which, from the symptoms of obstruction
in the membran. Schneider. I was ready &
think was the case. pills continued.
28 Applied vesicant. cervicit.
Took twelve nitres
Pulse 90 as before - complains of palpitation
of the heart sleeps pretty well unless
when the cough prevents it.

[Start of margin text]January. 5.[End of margin text] Applied ung. vesicat. & repeating pro re nata
A flanel shift was recommended - milk
& vegetable diet. These were complied with.
Cannot be perswaded to take womens milk
from a strong aversion she has to it.
[Start of margin text]17.[End of margin text] Stomach much oppressed.
Took ten grams of powdered ipecacuanha
the pills continued - the blister runs
very well with the issue ointment.
For drink
Mrs Keir has had no appearance of the menses
for these three years past save

once about 18 months ago. Was for many years by¬
gone subject to faintish-fits & palpitation of the
heart. Of a costive habit. -- When ailing had
a great tendency to sweating. Within these
two weeks has complained of a straitenedness
of her breathing. Urine turbid, depositing
a copious sediment. Of late a slight degree
of swelling in her feet. Her expectoration,
which is pretty free, is perfectly mucous to
appearance. Her pulse is this day 90 as before
but a good deal irregular the palpitation being
very frequent. Slept pretty well last night:
cough very frequent, though not so much so as
some days ago.
