Ladykirk October 24th: 1777

Sir

Mr. Heriot of Ladykirk for whom
your advice is requested is about seventy
six years of age, and was seized with Pains
across his Shoulders, about two Months
ago, which seemed to proceed from his
getting wet; these in five or six days ex¬
tended down his right thigh. The Pains
continued for a fortnight, when a fever
not very acute came on. He took the saline
Julep
in considerable quantities, which
carried the fever entirely off and very much
abated the Pains. Weakness, want of Appe¬
tite
& Sleep were now Symptoms very
troublesome, these continued some weeks
with little Alteration. About a Month ago
he began to take a little red Wine & Water,
which has been continued ever since, in¬
creasing its quantity; which now amounts

[Page 2]

to two Bottles in three days. He also took a dose
or two of the Bark, but as it increas'd the
Pains, it was given over. He is now rather
stronger, tho his Appetite continues bad, &
instead of resting badly at night, he now
sleeps rather much, nay, often in the day
shews a too lethargic Disposition, and is
never perfectly refreshed with it. He makes
Water very frequently
, which is of the na¬
tural Color, but does not deposite much
Sediment. He takes at present his Wine
as I said before, and once in the day a
large spoonful of white Mustard, and
as the wine makes him costive a soap pil
or two in the day. Your advice how to ma¬
nage him in regard to the Lethargic habit,
frequent making of water & general weak¬
ness
, by the first Post, would very much
satisfy his Family and oblige

Sir
Your most obedient Servant

Wm Home
