Sir,

I was favoured with your Letter some time ago & beg
Leave to return you my most sincere Thanks for your kind
Attention to my wife's case. Some Days before receiving your
Letter the right Thigh began to sweat to a considerable Degree
tho' not to so great a Degree as the rest of her Body. This I
considered as a very good symptom from which I expected the
most beneficial Effects. I have however been very much dis¬
appointed, for tho' she still continues to sweat more profusely
& frequently
than is thought convenient for her, yet these sweats
give no manner of Relief
from the Pain, nor do they seem in the
least to have abated the Disease. As the design of Dovers Pow¬
der
appeared to me to be solely to promote sweating & as that
Effect had happened before receiving your Letter, I delayed
giving her that Medicine till I should see what Change these
sweats
would produce, without it. She is leikwise very much
distressed in what she calls a starting in the sore Thigh with
a kind of Languor, & Palpitation, which are supposed to be symptoms

[Page 2]

of some nervuous Disorder; attended with quick Pulse, & at times
a considerable Degree of Fever. I told you formerly that she
was naturally of a very weak Constitution, & is at present
very much extenuated & weakened by a very painful Dis¬
ease & of very long Continuance. As Dovers Powder there¬
fore was not given her, for the Reasons above mentioned, &
as you was kind enough to invite ↑me↑ to write you an account of
her Case, the Physician who attends her would have me ask
your opinion, whether notwithstanding these sweats to which she
has too great a Propensity
& which he considers as the Effect of
& a symptom of great weakness & notwithstanding the low
state to which she is reduced; [whether?] Dovers Powder might still
be given her with safety & advantage. If you are of opinion
that this Medicine ought to be tried, I would beg the favour of
you to order some Dozes of it to be sent me, for it is a certain
Truth, tho you will hardly believe it, that this Medicine is very
little known at Aberdeen. There is indeed an Apothecary who
pretends to sell Dovers Powder: but he does not say that he
has imported it from London & confesses very frankly that
he makes it up himself. You will not therefore be surprised

[Page 3]

that I would ↑not↑ incline to trust to a Medicine of this Nature pre¬
pared by such ignorant & careless Hands.

I am with much respect

Sir
Your most Obedient Servant
Pat Duff

P.S. The present sweats can not be Effect of James Powder
which were formerly given her in small Quantities but have been
discontinued about a Month ago.
