Directions for Mr. Stroke

Amongst the various Causes which occasion Vertigo,
or swimming of the head, and headach; fullness of
Vessels appear in this Case, to be a principle reason
that degree of numbness and insensibility of the left
Arm
and side, is more probably a consequence of the
other complaints, than original in themselves ↑by↑ the
removal of the first these last will follow in course.

To effectuate this purpose, and prevent farther re¬
pletion of the
Vessels, a moderate use of flesh and
wine, and on the whole a spare Diet, with Exercise,
especially on horseback, is recommended.

Blood must be taken at the jugular or Arm to
the quantity of ten or twelve ounces, and this
operation to be repeated a fortnight after, if the
symptoms, are not wholly abated.

[Page 2]

Attention particularly is to had to the state if
the Bowels, so that no day pass without [proventing?]
a stool. The Laxative Electuary, prescribed below will
answer this intention; failing of which the
Ol. Ricini may be used. --- A small part of
the Blister on the head, should be kept open.

Directions may be used with advantage, - such as
rubbing with a flannel Evening and morning
from the nap of the neck, downwards, likewise
the Leg and and Arm of the Affected side.

In order to strengthen the stomach, the bitter
Infusion
will answer the purpose.

If notwithstanding the pain in the head remain,
after some weeks continuance of this practice,
Blood must be taken from the back part of the
head
, by the means of cupping glasses, which in
many, answer, often general bleeding have failed.

[Page 3]

The the above is what presently occurs to be [done?]
in the Case which I hope will be attended, with
agreeable consequences.

Take ten ounces of lenitive electuary and add half an ounce of soluble tartar; mix and be the electuary. Label M. N. M., to be taken every night.

Take the bitter infusion [S.?] Edinburgh Pharmacopoeia Label {illeg}, three to be taken twice a day.
