Dear Sir

Your Patient Mr Brown Who in Winter last Consulted You
about his Eyes, has with the strictest exactness followed your advice.
The three ointments, The Mercurial Saturnine and ex ærugine, have had
their several trials agreeable to Your Directions: He thought he was
more sensible of benefit when he used the Saturnine Ointment than the other two,
which Determin'd him to Continue or rather to return to the use of it,
after he had finished the Green Ointment. About the 1st of February there was
a much GreaterDischarge of thick Gross matter from his Eyes than had
been before that, and there was a swelling in some of the Cutaneous
Glands
under his ears, one of which suppurated, this Determin'd me to
Give him a mercurial bolus at night & a cooling purgative Ptisan next
morning. These were repeated once a week, & a large blister was
applied between his shoulders. The Quantity of Matter which came from
it realy exceeds credibility; upon its Cicatrizing, another was applied
to the Crown of his Head, which Was been kept running by Issue Salve
till very lately that he was from home for Some Days & had ne¬
glected it, and has his Eyes had been for some time better he has done
nothing since: However tho they look better & he finds them stronger
Yet he still complains of the Muscæ Volitantes, & thinks they rather
increase.

As You mentioned the trial of Mercurials when the season
turnd warmer, he begs to have your advice as to the use of them or what¬
ever else you may Judge proper for him. Of late he has complained of a
soreness on the extremity & edges of his Tongue. I imagine this is only a Topical

affection, tho' the Gingivæ are a little Puffy & Swelled also: As his children are
at the Salt water he proposed to me Going down & trying a Moderate use of it for
a week or Ten Days till such time as we have Your answer, to which I readily
consented, tho' the short time he can spare cannot do much service.

I shall be very hapy to hear of Your welfare, & I hope soon to hear
of the republication of Your lectures on the Materia Medica, for however in¬
correctly Your Students had Done it, Yet it was the Most useful thing of the
kind for Young Men. 1 . The Post leaves me Just time to Conclude with Sincer¬

Notes:

1: When Cullen heard that an edition of his lectures on Materia Medica (pharmacy) had been prepared for the press by some of his former students he threatened legal action but came to a compromise and the book appeared as Lectures on the Materia Medica, as delivered by William Cullen, M. D. Professor of Medicine in the University of Edingburgh. Published by Permission of the Author, And with many Corrections from the Collation of different Manuscripts by the Editors (London: 1772). It was 1789 before Cullen completed and published the revised version he fully endorsed.
