you have no doubt heard of the distress of your friend
Mr Inness Rosyburn as such complaints are always alarming
& may at best prove tedious I was anxious to have the assis¬
tance of more advice in his Case which he & Mrs Innes have

Consult any Physician in Edinburgh, in whom you have the
greatest confidence -- Mr Innes is a very valuable young
man, one for whom I have a very great esteem & I should
be very unhappy if any thing was omitted that could contri¬
bute to this recovery -- the chiefe reasons for giving you
this trouble are to prevent any discouraging {illeg}↑{illeg}↑ to
be mentioned in the Consultation, as it must be ostensable
to himself, or what might not be proper for him to see
to be wrote to me separate, & to desire if a strict Re¬
gimen be thought proper that it may be enforced by every
argument suitable to a young man -- I should do him
much injustice if I accused him of obstinancy in following
advice, but every thing I have said to him as to keeping
quiet & easy & avoiding Diversions that may beget keeness

& raise his passions, will no doubt be more attended
to that it is likewise the opinion of another Physician --
You are well acquainted with Mr Inness & can suggest
what particular Cautions may be proper to recommend to him -
I have not mentioned to Mr Inness nor any of his friends
that I have wrote you on this subject
Your friend Lady Abercromby has recovered her strength
considerably, but such complaints at her Ladyships time
of Life are seldome quite removd --
I beg to present my most respectful compliments to
Mrs Abercromby & all the family I am with much esteem
Sir
your most obedient
humble Servant
[Page 3]
P.s. youll readily guess at what I mean as to Cautions ne¬
cessary for Capt Inness, tho no Gambler yet in his present
situation gaming to any extent that may excite his Physician
may be hurtful - as I thought proper to leave that choice of
the Physician to be consulted to your
self I would not write any Letter with
the information & indeed my medical
acquaintances in Edinburgh are not now
very numerous since the Death of the old Physicians.
Dr Cullen is the one to whom I am best acquainted
& whose abilities are well known, but still we shall
be well enough off with any body you think proper
as information should, I think, confined entirely to [friends?], I
have given no opinion of the case, but I wish to know how
far its thought to be connected with the inflamned eyes ↓&c↓
