The Consultation Letters of Dr William Cullen (1710-1790) at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh

[ID:1110] From: Mrs Anne Stewart / To: Mrs Sarah Blacklock (Johnston(e)) / Regarding: Mrs Anne Stewart (Patient) / 17 January 1775 / (Incoming)

Letter from Anne Stewart, Abbey Green (Lesmahagow), relating her own case of 'a soar Breast I have got' since breastfeeding her baby two years before. Letter addressed to Mrs [Sarah] Blacklock, requesting that she read it to Cullen. The sender is a friend of Mrs Blacklock's sister, Miss Johnston and she also sends compliments to Sarah's husband, Dr Thomas Blacklock, the blind poet and scholar who, with his wife, ran a boarding house in Edinburgh mainly patronised by medical students. There is a note in another hand (almost certainly that of Mrs Blacklock's) commenting on Anne Stewart's case.

Dear Madam

As I am Accquainted with no
body at Edinburgh that I could write to upon the
subject that I am going to trouble you with,
but my former Accquaintance with you, & my
intimcy with your Sister Miss Johnston,
makes me presume to trouble you, & beg you
will read Doctor Cullen the following Accoun↑t↑
of a soar Breast I have got, it is very Neigh
two years since it first turned soar. First of
all it Bealed upon the side of my Breast a
little from the Nipple, but healed soon up.
About six weeks after my Layingin I inoculated
the Child
& his mouth being soar he Could
not suck which obliged me to milk my Breast
& that & the Childs soar mouth when he
could suck any fretted the Nipple so much
that I was then obliged to give up Nursing,

[Page 2]

it healed very soon after I gave up Nursing,
& continued very well for some time, after
which it grew tender round the Nipple & ↑has↑had
a rawness & dampness upon it ever since,
Excepting for a few days or some times for a
week it will be quite well & dray which I
think is owing to my washing it with Lime
water
, it drays it & a thin dray skin groes on
it at which time it turns very itchey & the
thin dray skin comes of it after which it
will be damp and raw for some time to¬
gether, it gives me no pain nor is there any
hardness about it, I have had a spot upon
one of my hands for this some little time
very much like the spot upon my Breast,
I would be glad how soon I could have the
Doctors Answer as I would wish to doe some
thing immediately as it has been of so longe
a standing. Mr Stewart joins with me

in offering kind Compliments to Mr Blacklock
and you.

and am Dear Madam
your much obliged Servant
Anne Stewart

PS
inclosed is a Guinea which you will give
the Doctor

Lady Catherine is of opinion that
Mrs Stewart is too low ↑in her Diet↑ & that it is
something of the scurvy she has had
a Child since her breast began but
did not attempt nursing I fancy she is
with Child again
