For Mr Henry Watt.
Tho a stiffness & pain in certain postures still
continue I think it some recovery that you are free
of the stinging pains & I think that the swellings
promise still more relief; & I expect much from a
better season. You may lay aside the medicine last ad¬
vised but the costiveness that may arise in consequence
[Page 2]
must be obviated by an Anderson's Pill every second or
third nights. For discussing the obstructions that will
remain in your joints I have prescribed below - & use it in
this manner. Put a teaspoonful or two of powdered loaf
sugar into a teacup & upon this drop 25 drops of the oil
prescribed. Stir it well among the Sugar with the back of
the teaspoon; then pour upon it two or three tablespoonfuls
of Spring water & stirring the whole together very well drink
it off immediately & wash it down with two or three mouth¬
fuls of water. This you are to do every night at bed time
but every night you are to increase the Dose by seven drops
till you come to 70 & then let me know how it does with you
While this is going on, lay your left hip joint as easy as
you can & change the position of it as often as you can.
If you could lye upon a piece of good fur it would make
your lying on one side safer but the best of all will be
your coming out of bed & sitting in a chair as often as
you can for it is better to alternate than to sit or lye long
at a time --- & tho motion is uneasy you should bear it often
Your Diet is very right & enough till you can bear more exercise.
I have no objection to a little burnt brandy providing it be well burnt
& taken with bread & not often. You may be as well without
the Malago or other wine, unless you find a little of it
serve instead of the dose of pills.
Take two drachms of Oleum Succini --- half an ounce each of terebinth. and olivae spiritus Mix. Label: Aperient Oil.
