Reply with directions for Sir Robert Henderson.. As the Bath waters are not helping his gout, he is recommended to leave Bath as soon as the weather is warm enough for travelling, and either return home (which is 'northwards' of there) or go 'abroad' to 'the South'. For Sir Robert Henderson

I ought to have had more particular information from some¬
body of the Profession but from Lady Hendersons account I am
of opinion that drinking the Bath waters does not suit Sir Robert's
case & I was always doubtful of the propriety & safety of his
bathing in them. Surely it ought not to be urged against the
opinion of the Bath physicians who are for the most part
ready enough to recommend {illeg} them. I am therefore upon
the whole of opinion that Sir Robert has no temptation
to remain in Bath longer than till the Season shall allow
him to remove from it. I think he may be the better
for travelling but he can hardly move northwards
with safety for two months to come but if mild weather
& the circumstances of the disease allow him to go
abroad he ought to take as much exercise in the South
as he possibly can. With respect to remedies I dare not
positively advise without knowing more particularly the
state of his pulse & other symptoms but can easily bel¬
ieve that he may have more medicines than are absolutely
necessary tho I cannot say positively without knowing
exactly what medicines he has been taking. If there is
no fullness nor frequency of his Pulse I think Chal¬
ybeates
with some aromatics are the safest & most
effectual means for keeping the Gout out of the
Stomach
