For Bethune of Balfour Esqr.
Mr Goodsirs judgement of the case is sensible and
just. The stomach is certainly the part chiefly affected
but such affections throw the blood into the vessels of the
head. For this you must apply 4 leeches to one temple
[Page 2]
& afterwards to the other and this I hope will be of
service to his eyes & vertigo.
Instead of the Rhubarb which is so much failed, to
strengthen his stomach I advise every forenoon to
take two spoonfuls of the following
Take a drachm each of crushed Columbo Root, crushed Orange Peel, and crushed Cinnamon Bark, and 14 ounces of very hot water. Steep for 12 hours, then add 3 ounces of Peruvian Bark Tincture and an ounce of Aromatic Tincture, and after it has settled, strain through paper. Label: Stomachic Tincture two tablespoonfuls an hour or two before dinner.
If any costiveness however come on he must take
the Rhubarb or some other Laxative ––
This letter was addressed open to Mr Goodsir &
inclosed in a cover addressed to Mr Bethune himself.
