This term has a very specific meaning within eighteenth-century medicine. It refers to the ways in which specific medicines were seen to act upon the body as in 'emetic' (induces vomiting) or 'febrifuge' (lowers a fever). Cullen wrote extensively on the actions in his Materia Medica (Edinburgh: 2 Vols, 1788, cited as MM ), and so wherever possible his own definitions have been included in the notes. However, be aware that these listings track ALL references to a given action so to isolate those mentioned in Cullen's own letters refine any document results to 'outgoing' only.
