Letter from Jane Porter, an old friend of Cullen's, in Durham, concerning her own case. She suffers from spasmodic pains in her stomach and under her breastbone. Dr Fenwick has prescribed various medicines, seemingly with little effect. She is a widow with five children, and concerned for their future should anything happen to her (most went on to notable careers); her only sister has recently died. She also sends condolences to Cullen for his loss (presumably of his wife). | 13 September 1786

Reply to Mrs Porter concerning her own case. Cullen apologies for not replying sooner, as he has been in the country. He asks her to ask Dr Fenwick to send a fuller account of her case. | 19 September 1786
[DOC ID:2883] |
Letter from John Ralph Fenwick, a former student of Cullen, concerning the case of Mrs Porter. He writes that he had asked her not to write herself as her case was 'in some respects singular' and that she has 'by her habits with medical men acquired a confused notion of many of the terms & doctrines of physic', but notes that she had written anyway. In outlining his treatment of her, he also warns that she has not always followed instructions with medication, and that her 'predilection to opiates somewhat retarded the cure'. | 22 September 1786
[DOC ID:5341] |
Reply to Dr Fenwick concerning the case of Mrs Porter, whose condition Cullen believes to be 'gouty'; Cullen mentions his 'former acquaintance with Mrs Porters husband and herself'. | 28 September 1786
