Carbonated water. Soda Water: Water artificially impregnated with Carbon Dioxide gas. Chemist and physician Joseph Priestley, in his paper Impregnating water with Fixed Air (1772), described a method of dropping "oil of vitriol" (sulfuric acid) onto chalk to produce carbon dioxide gas, while enabling the gas to dissolve into agitated water.
