The Case of Miss Betty Lindesay

About the month of July last, she was seiz'd
almost instantaneously with exquisite pain
in the Hypochondria, especially the right side
which afterwards communicate to the Abdomen
& soon had pains thro' the rest of her body, much
in the Extremeties imitating the Rheumatism
but without inflammation or swellings of
the joints, & shifting from place to place with
more & less violence, attended with frequent
belchings of wind, restlessness, anxiety, & other
Symptoms common in the Hysteric Disease,
with want of apetite, sometimes vomitings, cost¬
ive
, & the pain violent &; long fix'd in the
Regio Hepatis.

After a Course of Aromaticks, Gums, bark
steel, opiates, Tincture of Sacred Elixir Solutions, & some
Topical Applications, etc. she found but little
benefit from all these.

Her present situation, the pain of her right side
is now almost gone & also pretty easy through the
other parts, but complains more of her left side
& as she describes it, like a weight at the bottom
of her Stomach, especially when the Bile regurgitates
in to her Stomach, providing green bilious vomitings
as often as it gathers in any quantity, becomes very
sick, with a languid slow pulse, & then she is seiz'd
with a windy rumbling noise in the abdomen, which
both herself & others may hear, & then she throws
up the green bilious [trash?], with pain, difficulty,
sweatings, & waste of Strength, and tho' she gets
vomits, she seldom or never throws up the Bile
by them, but a clear glutinous matter, which also
collects itself in her Stomach, & till reliev'd by that
mean, loaths every thing- She renders but little
Urine, high colour'd, soon subsides a thick sediment
with a Colliquative oily Scum on the Top.

there is also a pretty large hard tumor in one of
her Breasts, without pain or any apparent Inflammati¬
on, if there is any thing similar in the other viscera
is not so easily discoverable.

She is quite free of Headack, fever, or drought
her Lungs perfectly sound, & has the menses regular¬
ly in quantity, colour & duration.

[Page 2]

She has begun to take Saponaceous with mild
ponderose Medicines, Opiates at night, and
Laxatives, or Injections when necessary, but as
the tryall has been so short can say nothing of
their Effects yet, only her Stomach does not throx
them up
