Mr. F. the Gentleman who desires the Advice of a good
Physician is past 62 years of age, of a Robust Constitution,
never had any Sickness till about 4 years ago, but always
eat & drank very heartily, & took a great deal of Exercise
both on horseback & in machines &c In his 58th year he
got very severe Rhumatic pains, after a Cold, in his arms
& legs, which did not leave him till the summer -- after
using warm baths & proper medicines -- his former good
health was then perfectly restored -- But in october
last year, 1765, he lost his appetite so much, that he cou'd
take nothing but Buillon, or Broth;
his flesh fell away
very much, he was troubled with Colic pains, obstruction
or costiveness, a slimy furr'd tongue without any bitter taste
in the mouth -- He however did not much regard these Symp¬
toms, & consulted no Physician, taking only some heating
Stomachicks, till in December he was persuaded by his Phy¬
cian to take some grains of emetic tartar with Sal. Cathart.
amar.
↑used↑ according to the french manner, en lavage - which
brought away a great deal of Slime or phlegm & gall ----
Mr. F. was averse to more medicines, but about the
beginning of this month he was bled, & thereupon

[Page 2]

he took a short journey, which increased his above
mentioned Complaints; he got head ach's, fell more off
& grew weaker, had a constant inclination to sleep, &
cou'd with great difficulty bring his Stomach to receive
his usual Bouillon, which he had hitherto used with
a pretty good appetite --- In this Condition I
found the patient when I was called to him about
three weeks ago, vizt. the Beginning of march -- I
observed a white slimy tongue; the white of the Eyes
of a yellow hew; his urine, which came away in a
sufficient quantity, was of a dark yellow colour;
the pulse was weak & very slow; the appetite was al¬
most entirely gone
, & what he threw up from thence much
coloured with gall; the Body very much decayed -- frequent
inclinations to vomit & what came up was mixed with Slime
or thick phlegm -- The patient however felt no pains, had
no febril motions, & no pressure in the hypochondrus nor any
hardness there -- I prescribed the use of gentle apertive pills
ex sapone ven. rhei, Extract. Cent. m. fumariae et gummi
amon.
with spa water & a proper dyet -- I found how¬
ever these remedys wou'd not answer the purpose alone

[Page 3]

I therefore gave the patient at the same time Boraginis
et Bugloss. with some grains of Tartar. emet. -- this operated
in the first few days gently per vomitum, but more per
alvum; procured ease, & freed the patient of his head ach,
& caused also some little appetite, but in 5 or 6 days these
remedys had no Effect & ceased to operate, & by raising a
peuking seemed rather to hurt the Stomach -- I upon
this encreased the dose of rhei in the pills -- which were
taken in the Evenings, but in the mornings a purging
Electuary which M. Chevillon had prescribed, composed of
Rad. Jalap. [Diagrijd.?] Croc. Mart. & some aloe -- This seem'd
needfull to carry of the Shiny & gally phlegm, especially
as the patient had not ↑yet↑ used any strengthening stomachic
remedy, & cou'd not bear even urine - yet I hope in a
few days to be able to give him the Bark with ad¬
vantage.
