The Consultation Letters of Dr William Cullen (1710-1790) at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh

[ID:775] From: Miss Thomson / To: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / Regarding: Miss Thomson (Patient) / 27 March 1765 / (Incoming)

Letter from Miss Thomson sent from Bath concerning her own case. She reports a lack of progress following Cullen's prescription and advice to employ bougies. Written in third person, but this is almost certainly a matter of formality, an assumption supported by the intimacy of her report.

Miss Thomsons Compliments to Doctor Cullen, &
is sorry she is so obliged to give him further
trouble, as she has used the Bougies these
six weeks past but has not found the benefit
from them that she flatter'd herself she
would, tho' standing does not give her now
so much uneasiness as it did before she
used the Bougies, nor is she near so
frequently sore as she was, yet she is still
some times the week before she is out of
order, & some times afterwards very sore
& as usual when the soreness grows better
she is so dreadfully itchy that it is
still more uneasy than the soreness,
& when she is sore, her water is very
thick & muddy. She finds it quite as
easy to her to use the Bougies without
any assistance as she did the Syringe
& after the two or three first days
that she used the Bougies it gave
her no more uneasiness to put it in

complaint is almost intirely fixed in the
entrance of the passage as she finds
that is the only place that pains her
when the Bougie touches her, the
straitness is vastly better at some
times than at others for she has
frequently used the largest of the
Bougies without giving her any
pain, at other times she can hardly
use the smallest, when she is out of
order, she thinks the straitness worst
as she is then obliged to use the
smallest of the Bougies, & indeed
she has thought the straitness
worse these some days past than
it has been since she used the
Bougies. She has had these six or seven
Months past a violent Head-Ack
attended with sickishness one or two
days while she was out of order,
& these two last Months, she has had
it the third day after she altered
& that has left her & only returned

sed at as she used always to be out
of order for six or seven days, she
has used the warm Bath for above
these two Months thrice a week, &
four times when out of order; she
has drunk a little of the Bath
water
but as the Doctor desired
her to be very cautious about it
she has drunk so little she cannot
be a judge whether it has been of
service to her or not. She begs
Doctor Cullen to let her have
his directions as soon as possi¬
ble; she will be quite impatient
till she hears from him having
entire faith in his Opinion, she begs
likewise, he will be so good as let
her know whether he would
have her drink the Bath water.
She has followed exactly the last
directions she got from the Doctor
& she has taken the Emollient Powder
