Isle of Man. 21st. October 1783
Dear Sir
I cannot suffer Campbell to depart without
giving him a Letter for you, to thank you
for the kindness & attention you have shewn
him, & to beg you wou'd continue to favor
him with you advice, both with respect to
his Conduct & the Prosecution of his Studies.
He seems indeed extremely sensible of your
friendship, & Im persuaded there is no per¬
son to whose advice he will pay so much
Deference. --- As I did not think it
proper for him to travel with much specie
about him, I have given him a small
bill on London, which I must beg will favor
you as to assist him to get Cash for. Mrs. Colden
tells me, that on the like occasion, she was
recommended to Mr. Sheirlock Banker in the
Exchange, who is a particular friend of Campbell's
uncle in London. I shall be obliged to you
therefore if you will introduce him, as Mr.
Duncan Campbell's Nephew, to Mr. Sheirlock
who will hereafter negotiate such little mat¬
ters for him - The Bill is drawn by very
sufficient Men here & I make no doubt will
[Page 2]
be duely honored --- You will be
so good as present my best respects
to Mrs. Cullen & all your family
Miss Margaret in particular, whose
company render'd our solitude so
agreable last Summer, that if the
Muses had not long forsaken me
I shou'd have been tempted to la¬
ment her Absence in a pretty Pasto¬
ral - I know nothing that can
compensate for it, except you wou'd
have the Goodness to pay us a
visit if our Island coud afford any
thing to invite you. - This reminds
me to beg you woud remember me
to Dr. Walker, when you see him. -
whom I had the Pleasure of {illeg}
here some years ago, & who I was
inform'd met with something new
worthy of Observation. Adieu, my
dear Sir
believe me with great truth
& esteem
your most obedient servant
