For Mr Alexr. Craig

While his urine is in due quantity I can think of no
cause of his anasarca but an obstruction of the Vena Cava
or of a considerable portion of the Lymphatic glands which may
happen in an originally scrophulous constitution & upon either
supposition I do not know the remedy. But his mind must be
kept easy & remedies must be tried. Your infusion of Gentian
is very innocent & I would along with it give some of the
Steel Tincture. I think you may in due time try another
dose of the Dover of twenty grains. And as you are obliged to em¬
ploy Laxatives if you think his bowels can bear it you
might try a dose of the Composite Jalap Powder with a few grains of
Calomel & if he bears it with any relief of his swelling you
may repeat it.
