For Mrs Schaw.

Her Disease A nervous & Spasmodic Asthma, & threatened with
some Symptoms of Dropsy, but they have yet made no progress and
may I hope be turned entirely aside.

The Medicines proper prescribed below. They are intended to keep
her Belly regular & promote Urine if her dose proposed does not do
this it must be increased. ---

Air & Exercise very necessary - a continued Journey. The only
certain way of getting them regularly. - In the present state of the
season she should move to the South but when the warm
weather sets in she must come to some open airy situation

[Page 2]

in the North - Easy journies scarce more than three stages
in the day - at night large airy chambers.

Diet light and cool. -- Drink plain water
with a little Sherry - No malt Liquor ---
No Indian Tea or Coffee -- but Cocoa Tea or Water
Gruel & a third part milk & honey if she can digest it
she may take largely with milk & Gruels ---

As Supper very little of any thing - & if any a
bit of dry toast with a little wine & water or a little
Barley gruel with or a little sago with dry toast --

It is possible that violent fits of cough and Asthma may
require her letting a little blood; but I am much aversed to
it as it will increase her fullness & any tendency to Dropsy
upon her journey home if she has much cough &
restless nights let her upon getting home try the Quieting
Draught № 3. & to be repeated occasionally but avoid
the habit of it as much as possible

For Mrs Schaw

Nr. 1 Take an ounce of crystal tartar, four scruples of powdered jallop, prepared according to the Edinburgh Pharmacopoeia, half an ounce of lenitive electuary, and a sufficient amount of simple syrup to make a smooth electuary. Label it: Aperient Electuary and take a tea spoonfull or two several times a day, washing down each dose with tow table spoonfulls of the following

Nr.2 Take six ounces of rose water, and two ounces of each cinnamon water and plain water, and peppermint, half an ounce of oxymel of squills, half an ounce of diuretic salts. Label it: Aperient Mixture

Nr.3 Take an ounce of cinnamon water, two drachms of syrup of diacodium, and 15 drops of laudanum. Label it: Quieting Draught. Take in case of emergency.
