For Mrs Henderson

Your letter today convinces me that there is nothing
nephritic in her complaints
& I join in your opinion that
the disease is seated between the rectum & the neck of the
bladder.
. There may be schiriosity but her feverish state,
her pain & late discharge from the rectum with the
relief that followed lead me to think that there has
been a Suppuration, & it is to be feared there may be
a return of the same kind & upon the whole a doubt¬
ful event. I am at a loss to say how these conse¬
quences are to be obviated but the mild regimen and
occasional use of gentle laxatives are on every suppo¬
sition proper. Were it not for the frequency of her
pulse
I would try a slight alternative Mercurial course
but I would delay this till the Season is farther ad¬
vanced that she might use more freedom. In the
mean time I would give her some Cicuta beginning with
a small dose, increasing by degrees till you can obtain
sensible effects. But I should wish neither herself
nor her friends to know what you were employing & it
may at least fill up the time till you can determine
more clearly.
