To the Revd Dr Hay Concerning his wife

Her Case bad but never desert a Case. - We must try
to recover the tone of her Stomach.

Get some Tinct. Mart. Ph. Ed. of this give
ten drops in a glass of Spring Water - if this dose
be too much diminish & afterwards increase it
I do not suppose that she can bear any medicines to
cleanse her Stomach except it may be a Draught
of Chamomile Tea
when much nausea or
spontaneous Vomiting comes on -- All stronger
Emetics will certainly do harm - In such a Case
nothing keeps the Stomach light so well as a
regular belly & for that her own experience
must have taught her. -- Glysters but temporary
Small Doses of Aloetics frequently seem to me
the most proper -- I am surprised you dont menĀ¬
tion Opiates having been employed & if no
material objection lies against then I would
think them highly proper -- the illness she is
liable to tempore quo fluunt Menses shows to me
an irritability which can only be cured by Opiates ---
If this should increase Costiveness, that must be
obviated as above advised &c.
