Mrs Maxwell of Carriden Concerning her daughter

In my former letter, p.52 I have answered all
the qustions excepting two. ---- 1st as to Costiveness
you have judged right in giving the Magnesia in¬
stead of the Powders I ordered & I hope it will not
be necessary to continue the powders long except
some strong marks of Acidity should appear --
A moderate degree of it I hope may be obviated by
a dose of the Magnesia. -- But if either of these
with the addition of a little Rhubarb should not
answer as a Laxative or if the Costiveness should
require it to be repeated very often I would rather
employ another Laxative - Compound Powder
of Jalap at first half a dram & afterwards
as Mr Andrew thinks proper.

As to what is to be done in case of the
recurrence of a fit I must refer to what
I have said to Mr Andrew while at Carriden
