For Mr Adams of Pembroke -

Sometime after he came from the North, was very feverish & unfit to
bear motion but as that fever has been gone for a week or two past, should
not delay longer to take his journey homewards. but must travel
with some caution: One stage the first day, 2 the second & on the 3rd
& following days 2 or 3 stages, as suit his strength & other circumstances.

His Diet. a bit of any plain meat he likes best, at dinner but should
for sometime be moderate in the use of Animal food, filling up
with broth, pudding; & vegetables. No meat at supper. but take
Barley, rice, or sago. His breakfast Tea & bread & butter as usual.

Ordinary drink, water, with a little white wine in it. & every day
at dinner; may take 2 or 3 glasses of plain wine. Madeira or Sherry
are the best. And with his grain at night he may always have 2, 3
or 4 spoonfuls of wine. The quantity of wine must be regulated by his
being more or less free from feverish fits & sweatings in the night.
When very free from these he may take a glass or two of Porter or strong
ale instead of wine.

Upon the journey Mr A. must be extremely careful to guard
against cold. He should not travel in very wet weather. Should
not sit in the Chaise with the side glasses down. Keep his feet & legs
always warm & dry. & his bedlinnen always very dry. The ailment
with which Mr A. has been chifly troubled of late & the most [troublesome?]
on the road, is a costive habit. This will require laxatives, keep
regular without purging. For this the following Electuary.

Take two ounces of Cryst. tartar., one of powdered Jallop and one of Elect. lenit., and add a quantity of symple syrup enough to make a soft Electuary. Label as Laxative Electuary. Two or three teaspoonfuls for a dose at bed time.

But as travelling may increase the costiveness he
must adjust the dose by his own trials. I advise him also to take
some Castor Oil along with [being?] compounded as I have directed on

[Page 2]

the paper apart. It will be right for him to omit the Electuary & to take
in place of it a tablespoonful or two of the Castor Oils.

For some time past, He has taken an Anodyne Draught at bedtime.
but I have of late been gradually diminishing the doses &
wish to have it laid aside, hoping his journey will supply
[f?] its place. However take a small Phial of liquid laudanum
with him. & in case of want of sleep or pain in his bowels,
may take 25 gtt. at bedtime.

Take four ounces of Oleum ricini and one ounce of sweet Jamaican rum. Mix. Label: Castor oil, a tablespoonful or two at bedtime, shaking the phial very well before pouring it out.
