For the Revd. Mr Cowper -------

Mr Couper's ailments depend upon a weakened state of his
nerves & their appearances may vary very much: & they
have varied so often as to make it certain that they do not
depend so much upon local as upon general affection. A very
entire recovery of this, at his time of day is not to be expected but
I hope his ailments may be very much alleviated by the following
measures.

While the weather is tolerable let him be on horseback as much
as he can.

In every situation let him carefully avoid guard against
cold by being always warmly cloathed & by taking care to a¬
void dampness & moisture.

Let him take care by warm stockings thick shoes, to keep
his feet & legs always dry & warm & if at any time become
cold, let him immediately have them warmed by putting them before
the fire & chafing them with warm flannel, & observe this especially
at night lying down.

As at present he has a loathing of animal food, he should
abstain from it for sometime. He may take what vegeta¬
bles he finds easily digested but his diet should be chiefly
of milk & grain or what is made of grain; & therefore wheaten
bread of different kinds, wheaten flour, rice & & any
of these taken by themselves or with milk as otherwise
prepared as he likes best.

His best drink will be water, & he should no malt
liquor.

Take but very little wine & let that be of the strong¬
