The Consultation Letters of Dr William Cullen (1710-1790) at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh
[ID:3474] From: Dr Fotherley Pannell / To: Dr William Cullen (Professor Cullen) / Regarding: Mr William Bower (Patient) / 7 March 1789 / (Incoming)
Letter from Fotherley Pannell, giving the full case history of William Bower, aged about 27, son of Mr Bower of Scorton. Formerly an attorney's clerk in London, 'living well and rather freely', he 'frequently sacrificed at the shrine of Venus' and contracted gonorrhœa. He had his right hand amputated by Lambert of Newcastle, after a shooting accident c. 1782, and has been in declining health ever since. He is now extremely emaciated, with severe breathing difficulties and cough, as well as digestive symptoms. Pannell had advised him to travel to Edinburgh to consult Cullen, but he is getting worse, according to a letter from his father, received last night and here transcribed for Cullen.
