The Case of Mrs Ratcliffe

Mrs Ratcliffe is aged 29 years, was in
general healthy till the year 1780, when
she married.- Immediately after
her marriage, her Husband was afflicted
with a long and tedious illness, which
confined him to his bed for several
months, in the course of which period
Mrs Ratcliffe underwent great fatigue;
so that her health became impaired,
and her habit so remarkably delicate
that a predisposition to Phthisical
complaints
has since taken place-

In the year 1782 the patient be¬
came pregnant, and during that period,
had in general bad health, being subj↑ect↑et
to frequent Colds, Cough &c.- and was
so unfortunate as to have a most
painful, laborious, and difficult labour;

Which circunstance reduced her so
low, that her life was dispaired of
for some time.- And altho she
recovered much better than was expectd
yet her constitution was greatly re¬
laxed, and nervous languors, debility,
and sinking were now joined to her
original Phthisical habit.-- Some
weeks after her delivery, she took pre¬
parations of the Bark, combined with

strengthening Gums, aided by the Acid
Elixir of Vitriol
; a light nutriteous Diet with
the Goat whey was ordered, with the
requisites of pure air, moderate ex¬
ercise, on Horse back, with chearful
company &c. &c.-- Last year
the patient went to Ireland, where
she consulted a Physician, and nearly
the same course of Medicines were
continued.--

At present the Lady looks
Very delicate, is apt to become hoarse
on Very Slight Occasions, remarkable
proneness to a cough, which is not
constant but only temporary upon
catching any trifiling cold, a long
neck
which a white delicate skin
through which the blue Veins ap¬
pear distinctly, a circumscribed
redness in the cheeks, her
pulse easily flurried
and breathing
easily disturbed
, wandering pains
in the whole course of the right
side
, but lately they have been
more fixed in the right breast,
there is no sensible wasting of
flesh
, nor is the appetite much
affected
, neither is there any hectic
heat
, or fever perceivable at Evening

The Menses flow regu¬
larly at the proper periods--
The patient conplains of Violent
headachs
at times, which she

attended with great weakness &

her, from being able to take ex¬
