To Mr N Menzies at Perth
about Lady Mary Menzies --
Dear
Sir

I am glad I have it in my power to answer yours
the moment it comes to hand as I would always
wish to do ↑in↑ what regards Lady Mary Menzies, I am
happy to find the complaint for the time gone, It is what
I had no doubt of & it & it is possible also it may
return again upon some occasions but if it should I
hope her Ladyship will think on it as I do that it is
an affair of no danger or consequence, it is commonly
indeed the work of nature for Salutary purposes and
as such ought not to be rashly checked but at
the same I would only have it as the work of
nature and by no means as forced of which Cos¬
tiveness
is the most frequent cause - It is absolutely
proper therefore that care should be taken to
prevent this and it my opinion whatever

[Page 2]

may have been formerly the Constitution that now
the Costiveness should never go further than
two days without a medecine - I will not say
any more about Sulphur for two Reasons the one
is that it does not seem to suit her Ladyship
very well the other is that she has other resources

- As long as the manna answers without Incon¬
venience it may be employed & if it should either
fail or prove Inconvenient I think the Polychrest
& whey in the Dose proposed extremely proper
but I can not say so much for the Daffy's Elixer
which is ordinary more healing & liable to go the
length of purging - but if Experience has rendered
her Ladyship in her constitution more secure
in these respects I have nothing to say. I have
thus I think spoke to every point under consideration
and have only to add that I dont doubt tho her
Ladyship is better she will sometimes take some of
the Tea proposed & take notice of the other par¬
ticulars mentioned in my former Letters --

Nothing will give me greater pleasure than to
find I can contribute in the least to Her
Ladyships Health & thereby also oblige
Sir Robert for whom I have the greatest
Esteem & Respect -
