Dear Sir,

After Mr. Bates left Edinburgh,
the Inflammation upon his Ancle, which you
& Dr. Monro saw slightly increas'd attended
with Pain extending to the Bottom of his
foot
; when he got Home on Sunday there
was little more to be seen than a small
swelling without any praeternatural Colour
and the Pain has now intirely left that Leg
and this morning he has some similar Feelings
in the other Leg but without any discolour¬
ing - The Anodyne Draughts us'd upon the
Road had produc'd such Costiveness as to
prevent the operation of the laxative Bolus
but by adding ten grains of the Pulv: Jal:
comp
on Tuesday it had a very proper Effect,
and last Night he took the emetic which
discharg'd nothing very particular except
a little ropy Phlegm; this morning he
is rather squeamish & sick & has had no stool

[Page 2]

therefore I shall begin in the Evening
with the Guaiacum Mixture agree¬
able to your Prescription and I doubt
not of his Recovery by persisting in the Plan
order'd him when at Edinburgh; however
I shall be very glad of your joint opinion
as soon as you conveniently can and am
