Borrowstounness 19th. January 1778

Sir.

About a Month Ago Mr. John Key
consulted you, relative to a severe cold, hard cough
difficulty of breathing, Nocturnal sweatings, And all
Accompanied with a smart Diarrhœa - these which
he thinks he had received about a Month prior to that
when at sea, -- You prescribed for him a Pectoral
Tincture with Mucilage Gum Arabic Rob Sambuci & Syr. Limon
q.s. A. Strengthening Mixture, & an Astringent One, his
diet of the Milk & Vegetable kind - All which he has since
strictly & Uniformly Adhered to - soon After he came here
the Diarrhœa Abated, & the sweatings soon after dim¬
inished, his cough & breathing for this fortnight
past has been remarkable better, till within these
three days past was seized with spitting of blood
& the Night following return'd as the Night before

If you remember when he consulted you he was
accompanied with Mr. [Chym?] of Leith who informed
you also that he had been complaining of acute
pains in his Legs & forehead, apprehensions there
might be some Venereal taint in it as he had had a
Gonorrhœa some time before that, these Complaints
still continues much in the same way - for these
last complaints I have keept him drinking freely
of the Decoction sarsaparilla - knowing it would be of
injury to his Pulmonic disease - he has at times

been costive attended with an ascidity in his
stomach which I suppose arose from too liberal
an Use of the sweet Milk, I gave him two gentle
pukes since he came here, & Abated the Quantity
of Milk & substituted cow Why in its place --
When costive gave him small quantity Cream of
tartar which seems to Answer the purpose-----
his pulse is generally from 96 to 108. Mr. Key
& I are very Anxious to receive your further directions
which I beg may be done in course, & what other
symptoms may Occur Shall be sure of Advising you
