Dumfries January 29th 1777
Sir


A Gentleman from Jamaica who arived here
about five Months ago has desired me to consult you
with respect to his health and as expresses himself will make
a proper acknowledgment for the trouble you may be at.
His own account of his Complaints when in Jamaica are
as follows. In March 1776 he was [seized?] with an Inter¬
mitting fever
but did not prevent him from business.
He had at the same time a Cough and a pain in his breast.
In the Morning, he spitt and Vomited a Considerable
quantity of Phlegm
and in one day Vomited above
two quarts of
Blood he was let blood of frequently in
the space of 24 hours. The vomiting of Blood soon stopt
and has not returned soon after the vomiting of blood
he felt a sharp pain in his right side and a shortness
of breath
for which he was ordered two doses of Calomel
after which several gentle Purges and Bark
His Complaints since he came here are a difficulty in
breathing
a dry Cough pain in his breast and left side
In the mornings with great dilficulty vomits a Yellow
matter or rather Bile and Phlegm mix'd together
.
His Pulse is about 70 not very hard nor very soft.
He sleeps very little has no Inclination for any kind of
food
has taken very little medicine except a decoction of
the Tussilago leaves
a Mixture with Rob. Sambuc. Gum
Arabic
with a little of Elixr. Vitriol and two or three limes
an opiate at bedtime I am with much respect
