Dear Sir

I enclose two Guineas for Mr Russel - & I
begg leave to trouble you shortly with more
of the symptoms from a memorandum wrote from him¬
self as some of them I may have omitted yes¬
terday.

About 3 months ago since he first observed the tickling
pain
& frequency in making water, which almost
left left him on taking 2 or 3 purges & letting bood
2 months ago he rubbed with the ointment which I
am perswaded was of the turpentine kind
, which
produced the first erruption I described to you
[Start of margin text]*& a purge[End of margin text] & disapeared on bathing with sugar of lead soluti↑on↑*
again he had occasion to use the ointment &
the parts broke out afresh & more violently with
a little boil on testicles which is now sore

He has taken in 3 weeks time 50 mercurial pills
& his mouth not affected - & is going on with
another large dosefull – He also has rubbed these
6 days past with ointment
(suppose without
the turpentine as it has produced no erruption) &

[Page 2]

yet the mercury thus applied both ways has no effect
on him

He is restless at night since taking the mercury
& the sweat appears in the day time in drops
at his fingers end, besides profuse sweats at
night

He is a strong hearty man – has no fever all this
time
, nor does his appetite leave him.

He has had no chordee, nor running from the ure¬
thra
, but a little as I told you between the
foreskin & nut
this now sore but the parts a
little inflamed

A little heat & twinging pain in making water
still continues*↑*or rather returned on taking the pills for the 2d erruption with the desire to make it oftner
than usual – His throat I described to you – He has
been fomenting it with
vinegar at nights, but the
spots yet continue, tho they do not increase or grow
worse

These are all the symptoms both past & present with
Him which I either have noted or recollect

[Page 3]

With regard to myself I shall yet before I
leave Scotland take the liberty of laying
my education before you as I shall be hap¬
py to have your opinion on it along with me
& I hope after so much as you have said
& wrote me it will not be necessary
before. I am always with regard

Dear Sir
your most oblig’d Servant
