The case of a person affected with a violent Pthissis Pulmonalis
which happened in consequence of a severe blow he received
on his right side from the boom of a sloop which
he in consequence of his office was oblig'd to board
about a Leauge at sea the blow stunned him so
much that he Lay for some time one the deck
he call'd for some wine which gave him instant releif
as he was a man at that time of a strong and
Robust Constitution he gave himself no trouble
about the accident he received altho he often felt
pain on his right side where the injury was
received about three weeks ago after he spit up &
Discharg'd by stool Large quantities of blood
in so much that it appear'd to be all blood together
upon this he applyed to a Physician who ordered
him to be blooded three different times and gave
him Doses of salts and manna frequently as also
several Mixtures of Sperma Ceti this he Continued
taking for three weeks when instead of the
blood he spit a thick Yellow Pus upon this
the Doctor ordered the use of the Bark. The
effect of which was a violent heat in the
parts affected he at this time road out &
sometimes in a boat and went about as usual
A Vessell arrived from the Coast of Guinea bound
to Grenada the Captain of which was his {illeg}

Old acquaintance with whom he made rather
too free in Drinking too much Claret, the
Effects of which was that about two o Clock
in the morning he was attacked with a violent
reaching & threw up Large quantities of
pure blood
he got a Candle but was so very
weak from the loss of blood that he instantly
Drop'd on the floor, as if dead, where he again
threw up vast quantities of blood, upon his
getting a little easier he got hold of light doses
of bark which he mixed with Madera wine &
Drank off; this releived the Vomiting & he
was got to bed where he instantly got asleep.
Sent next morning for his Physician, who
order'd the former medicines to be Repeated
which were Continued for two weeks when
he spit pus again when the Bark was again
order'd with the Elix: Vit: Being oblig'd to Learn
the Millitary exercise he was frequently
troubled with a Spitting of blood he was
advised to take Turlingtons Drops and the
Millipedes unprepared, he took 60 drops thrice
aday, of the one thousand of the Millipedes a day
also the red of ↑an egg↑ in wine at Midday; this he
thought of service to him; getting Cold
he was afflicted with a Cough, so as he
Cou'd not Lye in his bed which has less
or more, Continued with him

The Continuance of the Cough & Spitting has reduced
his Strength so much that he is frequently und[er?]
the necessity of wearing a Staff, he was advised
to go to the Country, he went & Stayed
with a Physician who lived about a mile
from town, where he began a Course of
Medicine and a milk diet, the Medicines
name mostly of the pectoral and Emollient
kind he likewise allowed him an anodyne
Pill
, which was soon increas'd to five grains,
&, by degrees, to five times five; the effects of
which was that it gave him temporary ease;
but afterwards, a violent Tormina Ventris
which became intolerable; but after this, he
was rather advised to use Laudanum & decrease
the dose, which he has done to the quantity of
thirty Gutts every night, and means still to
go on, lessening the dose; he has been taking;
the flower of Sulphur, this some little time,
which, he thinks, he has had some releif from
and he at Present rides every good morning
which he thinks he is not the worse of, But
about the month of December Last there was a large
Colection of matter formed on the left side of
the anus which was taken for a boil, Lanced as
such, discharged near a pint of matter, but it at

Last on further examination turn'd out a Fistula in ano
with one single opening externaly, which has always
Discharged matter, more or less, since the opening
till this time; it gives him some uneasiness in
Sitting, which he is affraid may increase on
him; he, since the use of the Sulphur, has had
a burning heat in the soles of his feet which
is intolerable untill he bath them in warm
water which gives him instant ease the Sensation
is something like hectick ---- To return to Lungs,
there most Certainly is an adhesion of the right
Lobes in the Pleura, because, when he Coughs,
he is obliged to bend very low before he can
Discharge any Pus from his Lungs; he is, at this
time, advis'd to put a Large blister all over the
Side affected, which he intends doing; in the
mean time a Considerable time ago he got
a Cord put into the diseased Side, Side but its
not supurating properly gave him no releif
of any Consequence; he likewise has had an
Issue in his right arm this three months;
but sensible of no good effects from it, in the
month of may he was advis'd to use the Gum ammoniacum
Solution
& Balsamic Syr: with a Solution of G: Arab:
& a weak Solution of Sal Glauberis to be taken in small quantities,
since which time he has never spit blood but when the
Cough is troubelsome
