For Mr G. Meason.

Gilbert Meason Esquire about fifty years of age, of a full habit,
accustomed to full living but not to any frequent intemperance in
drinking, pretty much engaged in business & using little excercise
has for the greatest part of his life enjoyed very good health.

About Three or four years ago he began to complain of some
pain of the breast, which he especially & almost only felt upon
Walking. This pain by degrees increased & came at times
to be so violent as to oblige him to stand still for some time
& very often he could not resume his walking but with very
great pain.- He hardly felt at the same time any difficulty
of breathing
& his pulse was not any way irregular or hurried
He was often relieved by bringing up wind from his Stomach

This pain was especially felt at the lower part of his
breast bone
but for the most part was severe on each side
about two inches from the breast bone & frequently more
on the right than on the right than on the left. - From
these places also it has frequently spread along the
course of the muscles round his chest & very frequently
in to his arms & from his Shoulders down to his wrists.

For some time he was entirely free from these pains
when he remained at rest & did not feel them at all in the
night time but of late he has several times been attacked
with them in the night. He frequently rides on
horseback & in that situation has been generally
free from pain but of late on his first setting out
he feels the pain of his breast more or less but after a
little time it goes off & does not commonly return
while he continues on horseback. In this complaint
Mr M has had intervals in which he was less frequently

[Page 2]

& less severely troubled than at other times but these intervals in the
course of two years or more past have never been long. Otherwise he
has had very good health very free from any complaints of his
stomach or head, tho at sometimes he has had some flatulency
of his
stomach & some uneasiness but hardly amounting to
any pain of his head. He is ready to have his breast com¬
plaints increased by cold. About Six weeks ago he was
affected with the ordinary Symptoms of Catarrh or Cold
& in recovering from that he was attacked in the night time
with the pain in his breast more Severely than at any time
before. He is generally disposed to be costive & this when it
happens always aggravates the complaints of his breast.

In the course of this illness he has several times been affected
with a Scarcity of Urine but this has Never continued long
& at some other times he has had a copious flow of rather pale Urine

These are the circumstances of Mr Measons complaints & it is not
necessary to mention very particularly the remedies which have been
employed as their effects have never been considerable. Neither
a bleeding nor a blistering gave any relief. - Various Anti¬
spasmodics
& Carminatives have been employed & particularly
Other by bringing up wind gave a temporary relief but
never seemed to have much effect in preventing returns.

What seems to have been of most service is a solution of
Gum Guaiac
with some of our Tinct. senn. conpp. which has
kept his belly regular & favoured the discharge of wind
downwards
. Moderate living & frequent excercise on
horseback have been recommended & having been of late
more diligently practised seem to have for the present
given him as much health & Ease or rather more than
at any time for two years past.
