It illustrates the wide range of terms used to describe diseases as understood at the time including the "nervous" disorders that play a central role in Cullen's overarching medical theory. As a deliberate matter of editorial policy no attempt has been made, by way of retrospective diagnosis, to try to "translate" these historic designations in relation to any modern understandings of diseases or disease categories.
