Reply concerning the case of Miss Maddy Hamilton, probably to her mother. Cullen gives dietary advice, and comments on a Burgundy Pitch plaister. He recommends 'Travelling a great deal in a Whiskey' (a light carriage), beginning by going between her home at Duddingston and Merchiston Hall (home of her married sister Christian, wife of Hon. Charles Napier). | 12 July 1787

A very short letter to 'Miss Maddy' (Maddy Hamilton) concerning her own case: 'I guess at the interruption which happened at Merchiston hall' (her sister Mrs Christian Napier's home) probably hints at menstruation. He recommends starting her exercise routine again. Destination is inferred from the fact she seems to be at Duddingston on 12 July and 6 August. | 23 July 1787
[DOC ID:3211] |
Letter from 'M. E. H.' (Magdalane Elizabeth 'Maddy' Hamilton) on her own case. She mentions crossing in a yawl with Sir William Howe. She has been taking pills prescribed by Cullen and James Arrott. She suffers from cough and retching: 'I have had a great deal of sickness which I impute to a load of phlegm and stuff in the breast and stomach '. | 6 August 1787?

Reply to Maddy Hamilton concerning her own case, pp.221-2. Cullen gives her advice on travelling between her various relations scolding her for her 'delicacy' about staying in private houses, and says that 'If you will come to Ormistonhill I will lodge you, feed you and Nurse you as long as it can be of any service to you with the greatest good will'. His remarks about sailing with a 'Jonas' refers to Sir William Howe, mentioned in Doc ID 3211, presumably because of his lack of success on his American campaign. | 7 August 1787
[DOC ID:3208] |
Letter from Magdalane Elizabeth Hamilton in Westburn, on her own case. She writes, 'we have had a little jaunt to Cochney [now Cochno] and Kilpatrick', and she is planning a ride along the coast. She mentions Cullen's daughter Robina, saying that she 'has made us most comfortable and been of much consequence to all of us', and asks for Cullen to 'allow Robina a week or ten days longer absence'. | 24 August 1787
[DOC ID:3200] |
Letter from Mary Ann Hamilton, concerning Magdalane (her sister) and asking for Cullen's opinion on 'a sail', as he has approved these for her on the Firth (i.e. of Clyde). She also mentions that Magdalane has taken a vomit prescribed by Mr Arrott. Robina, Cullen's daughter, is staying with the family and 'is well Charming all hearts and pleasing all eyes'. The letter is dated 'Friday 7th': as it is part of a sequence from the late summer of 1787, this is September. | 7 September? 1787?
[DOC ID:5538] |
Reply to Miss Maddy Hamilton concerning her own case, characterised by cough and sweatings. It is sent via her sister Miss Mary. Cullen encloses a prescription and 'a list of Provisions for a long voyage', neither of which is now present. He advises on her journey, desiring her to be 'three or four weeks' afloat, and mentions Campbeltown, Stranraer and the Isle of Man as possible stopping-points. | 27 September 1787
